Got Me Good

Remember your creative writing teacher who forever admonished you to show, not tell? Well, if you're still trying to silly putty your brain around that one (I know I still am), go see Brokeback Mountain. This isn't melodrama, friends. This is art.

Aw, man. Are you really not going to tell us anything more about why we should see that movie? Let's pretend we had a conversation two weeks ago in which I said that while I appreciate well-made, well-acted films, I probably won't watch "Brokeback" until it's on video, if that, and that I don't like melodrama or "forbidden love"-drama. (...Oh wait, we did have that conversation) Why then, besides that it's art, should I go see it? What takes it beyond mere melodrama?

p.s. Sorry to be a hard-ass about this, but you know me, I'm not easily convinced :)

Isn't art enough?

Honestly, I could go on ad naseum about why this film leaves such an indelible impression, why I think it transcends the "tragic romance" genre, why I think anyone who appreciates the artistry of great filmmaking should see it. But that would be telling, and the movie deserves to speak for itself.

I avoided reading reviews of the film beforehand, but if you must, I highly recommend Stephen Holden's review in the New York Times. If it sounds like something you think you'd enjoy, go see it. Then we'll talk. :)
